Sample chapter excerpt
We enjoy creating stories where GOOD triumphs over BAD, but there is a price our heroes must accept to pay. One may question how this P-H-I novel series qualifies as a thriller – like stories about chasing serial killers or mass murderers while they are still on a loose killing spree, the deception for not finding helpful clues, followed by the risk of being exposed to these murderers’ whim, and seeing, capturing, and neutralizing them; are all good elements of this genre (thriller) best-selling novels and series. Typical serial killers have from 3 to 10+ victims. Following is a definition we found of serial murder, which FBI investigators widely accept as their standard:
"The unlawful killing of two or more victims by the same offender(s) in separate events.”
Stories attracting widespread readership are also all about killing by type of murderers:
Spree killing
- Serial killers
- Mass murderers
Mass murderers differ from spree killers, who kill at two or more locations with almost no time break between murders, and not defined by the number of victims, and serial killers, who kill people over lengthy periods.
I found the following three definitions for a thriller in The Free Dictionary by Fairfax.
- It is an exciting, suspenseful play, especially a mystery story.
- A tale of mystery, espionage, or crime of which the primary purpose is to entertain with suspense
And shock. - a person or thing that thrills.
Then how about something like fighting:
- mega forest fires
- famine
- diseases and sicknesses
- malnutrition
- poverty
- pollution
Not typical subjects for thrillers? But why?
Yet every year:
- Mega forest fires kill more than one thousand people and millions of animals.
- 23 million new cases of malaria, resulting in 400,000+ deaths.
- 40+ million people worldwide living with HIV – AIDS and 650,000+ deaths, primarily young adults.
- Famines killing millions.
- Genocides and punitive wars killing millions.
- Terrorism with selective killing, including innocent victims, akin to spree, serial, or mass murderers.
- Ten percent + of the world population living in abject poverty on less than $1 a day, dying of malnutrition, curable diseases, or sicknesses, lacking primary hygiene and healthcare,
Are we the accomplices to these known mass killers by not intervening when we can?
All the above are mega-mass killers and repeat offenders. Yet a novel series story about neutralizing any of these mega-mass killers may miss the thrills because we know who these killers are beforehand, except when fighting terrorism. However, if the fights become fiction with treacherous adversities along the plot, could these stories qualify as thrillers? We will not pretend for instance a famine killing thousands of people can be a thrill to watch killing people until it can be stop. We do not have to create fictitious famines; they already exist as mass murderers. The thrill will be in trying to stop existing famines and prevent new famines. We will propose our solutions and let our heroes try them. Moreover, we invite you to critique these solutions, agree, or disagree, and propose better solutions. Beware that we could all be the next victims of these mass murderers. Pick an existing mass murderer you would like to see neutralized, specifically threatening you, your loved ones and community. with your solution if you have one, or let our heroes try it on future P-H-I novel series editions.
